The Senate: Chamber of Shame
Posted On: July 18, 2007 at 3:20 PM By: Gabi
Imagine this conversation between Franklin. D. Roosevelt and General Dwight D. Eisenhower during April 1943...
FDR: "Ike, you're going to have to get the Normandy Invasion completed by June this year." Ike: "But I need at least another year to assemble troops and materials, establish logistics and strategy and train the men for the battle."

FDR: "Sorry. Several senators are feeling very uncomfortable with the war. Frankly, they have just had it. And several of them are worried about their re-election." Ike: "My men are fighting and dying for yards in Italy right now -- and even so, they can't wait to take the war to Hitler next year in France. Tell those pantywaist senators to unloosen their girdles, take an aspirin and go to bed -- and leave the fighting to my men." FDR: "But we could lose the Senate." Ike:" Better to lose the Senate than the war." FDR: "I'm with you, Ike. You beat Hitler, and let me beat the Senate." Ike:" My men thank you, Mr. President."

Of course, it is an absurdity to imagine such a conversation would have been possible during WWII. And it is a tragedy and disgrace that we are, in fact, having precisely such a conversation today.

The Senate is emitting an embarrassing level of emotional policy twitching on the topic of Iraq. Sen. Harry Reid can't take the war anymore. He "knows" it is lost. Sen. Olympia Snowe has just about had it with the Iraqi government. If they don't meet her benchmarks -- that's it. Sen. Mitch McConnell thinks, "that the handwriting is on the wall that we are going in a different direction in the fall, and I expect the president to lead it." Who authored that wall graffiti, he doesn't say. After talking with grieving family members of one of our fallen warriors, Sen. Pete Domenici "wants a new strategy for Iraq."

I haven't seen such uncritical thinking since I hid under my bed sheets to get away from the monsters back when I was 3 years old. Whether they are talking about war weariness, grief over casualties, fear of their upcoming elections, disappointment with the current Iraqi government or general irritation with the incumbent president: What in the world do such misgivings of U.S. senators have to do with whether we should continue to advance our vital national security interests?

None of these senators have even addressed the question of whether the United States is safer if we leave Iraq than if we stay. Isn't that the key question? The question is not whether the Iraqi government deserves American sacrifice on their behalf. Our sons and daughters are not fighting, being grievously wounded and dying for Iraq -- but for American vital interests. If this were just about Iraqi democracy, I might join the screaming for a quick exit.

But if al Qaeda can plausibly claim they drove America out of Iraq (just as they drove the Soviet Union out of Afghanistan), they will gain literally millions of new adherents in their struggle to destroy America and the West. We will then pay in blood, treasure and future wars vastly more than we are paying today to manage and eventually win our struggle in Iraq.

Our staying power, unflinching persistence in the face of adversity, muscular capacity to impose order on chaos and eventual slaughtering of terrorists who are trying to drive us out will do more to win the "hearts and minds" of potentially radical Islamists around the world than all the little sermons about our belief in Islam as the religion of peace. As bin Laden once famously observed -- people follow the strong horse.

We have two choices: Use our vast resources to prove we are the strong horse or get ready to be taken to the glue factory.

Even Bush's war critics who specialize in Middle East affairs (such as the Brookings Institute) believe that the immediate chaos in the Middle East that will follow our premature departure would likely involve not only regional war there, a new base for al Qaeda, but also a nuclear arms race that would quickly result in the world's most unstable region -- which possesses the world's oil supply -- armed with nuclear weapons on a hair trigger.

But the debate today in Washington is about none of these strategic concerns. It is exclusively about Washington's political timetable and when the president will bend to such political necessity. For self-admitted politics -- rather than national security -- to be driving decision making in wartime Washington is not only an unpatriotic disgrace -- it is a national menace.

But the worm will surely turn. And senators who today proudly call for retreat will then be hiding their faces in shame. The public will remember their cowardly act, and deservedly so.

This is not absurd at all. It is the truth and the truth often makes us ashamed. Right now I am so ashamed that our Congress is more motivated by politics than the safety of our nation and the world it makes me sick.

If you think this is bad, go look at France. They are teaching Arabic now. What a bunch of panty-waists. In Holland they are doing some other equally absurd b.s.. Now it starts, the appeasement of nations with the aggressor. Reminds me of Germany and the allies all over again. Only this time we don't have a Churchill to leas his nation with his strength and wisdom!

The world is on trouble and people are too lazy, self absorbed, or just plain stupid to see it!1 If we don't stop the Socialist movement crippling our government, it will all be over sooner than many might believe possible!

Well, the circus is reality and it's on us to tame the beast. Today, we have the Internet and it's on us to invade the message boards (i.e. MSNBC, etc.) in order to promote our mission. Therefore, it wouldn't be bad if we get the links to those boards on this web site. In addition, we should add the GOE web site link to all posts we make on those boards. Let the world know, that the Eagles are around, everywhere.

Harry Reid and his filthy pals in the senate are a national disgrace. they politicized this War from day one they believe they have an issue that is going to put them in complete power unchallenged. It would I fear will hasten the attacks and destruction on this country. reid and his sons should be in jail for unscruplous land dealings. They all should be driven from the senate on a rail. What cowardly horrible excuses for human beings.

It takes a different breed of cat to put their personal and political gain above the safety of the people living in this country. Most of the members of congress have left this planet as far as doing what's right for the American people is concerned. It's all about them.

I'll say it again....and I'm gonna KEEP saying it-----TERM LIMITS FOR CONGRESS----NOW!!!!!!!

I try to remain non-political to keep my blood pressure down, but you want me to show up in DC for something and camp out on the steps of the Capitol in a tent?????? Make it term limits for these clowns------I'M THERE!!!!!!

Hello, I hope that all that read this posting will find there health in good regard, and now for what I want to say and that has a whole lot to do with this article, and what has happened in the last 100 days that this present congress, and senate has been in power. It has done exactly NOTHING, and that is what everybody that knows the democrap party is fully aware that they would do, and that is exactly nothing. Here is the reason why I feel they have not done anything of substance, and you are going to have a host of people saying they have got to many things pushing them-(SENATE)-and the congress into making some foolish mistakes, and of course they will blame the President. Then you can look at who is really to fault for the lame reason for the House, and the Senates problems at the present time, and we do not have very far to look than at the head of the class, and I am speaking about the speaker of the house herself, and we all know who that is, and now that is out of the way I have but one thing to say, and that is the nation that stands against the Holy-Land-(ISREAL)- and will say to a terrorist state like syria that peace comes through them for the entire middle-east is nothing short of a FOOL. This foolish women has never seemed to be able to show any signs of common sense while she has been in power as the speaker. I am not a Prophet, but I see the utter destruction of some of the things, and the others that have said the reasons that all these floods, and all the other weather related problems are occuring is because of global-warming, and all I can say is hog-wash. God Almighty is in control of all the facets of weather, and all other facets of nature, and it is not some mother nature as some fools on TV say. God is in control, and He is indeed angry at this land for the SINS of this women, and her foolish friends in the house, and the senate. We as God Fearing, and Loving citizens of this great nation will pay if not now, soon. Hear-o-hear America my plea with all of you through this post from the G.O.E., and please do as the Lord of Hosts would have each, and everyone of us to do, and that is take sometime each, and every day to set it aside, and not only have a daily devotion to Him, but to earnestly Pray without cessing for the Holy-Land-(ISREAL)-so that God Almighty will again see favor with His people of this country that is called America. God Bless the G.O.E., and trully the EAGLE is the chosen bird of Jesus Christ because He knew what made that fantastic bird sore so high in the sky. May God, and Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit always Bless this great country of ours. REMEMBER EAGLES PRAY FOR THE HOLY-LAND ISREAL.

Thanks and God Bless, Larry Dale Crumbley P.S. Thanks so much for your help, and remember the only country in the Middle-east that peace will come through in that region is Isreal. Thanks again G.O.E. respectfully!!!
