Profile of an Active Duty Eagle
Posted On: June 19, 2007 at 7:55 PM By: < Former Member >
Eagles, Michael is an American freedom fighter who thinks enough about what GOE is doing to send us $100 every two weeks. That's an incredible sacrifice for a young soldier, but it clearly demonstrates the appreciation the troops have for what we are doing in their behalf. To say that Mike's note is humbling is to grossly overstate the case. This outstanding young American is fighting on two fronts--Iraq and America. He clearly understands the importance of what we're doing, and he makes me ever more determined to make sure that his commitment, along with that of the other 155,000 Americans in Iraq, to the cause of freedom is fully appreciated. Here is the e-mail that I sent Mike:
<>

I hope we hear from Mike again, and soon. In the meantime, keep him and his brothers and sisters in your prayers. Eagles Up! Larry Bailey PS: Read Mike's last line; that made my day!

(Note: The letter has been edited to comply with OPSEC and other concerns.)

Hello, sir, My name is Michael. I'm 21 and a Specialist Fourth Class about to be promoted to sergeant. My Military Occupational Specialty is 21B (Combat Engineer). My profession is just the same as the infantry's, except that we are trained in dealing in high explosives. Our main duty here in the Middle East is conducting IED sweeps and handling any IED's or unexploded ordnance. We do, though, contribute to the daily patroling and holding of houses here in Baghdad. I'm not Special Forces, but a buddy of mine and I are trying to get our SF packets together for when we get back to our post . I would be honored to give some form of notice or article weekly, but a sudden change in basing, along with our missions, probably won't allow that. Its been on the news already, so I guess it's no longer much of a secret that we're moving out of location to another city. Unfortunately, the base where we are to be stationed doesn't have enough computers or phones for everyone to use freely. I'm not sure if there's cell phone coverage and wireless internet, but I shall be bringing my cell phone, just in case. With our mission, being able to communicate with anyone will be slim, but if you and the rest of the GOE community would like, I will try to send some kind of word or answer any questions as soon as possible. I try to make my contributions every 2 weeks (every paycheck), but I feel that there's always more that I can do. I would give more, but with car payments and cell phone bills, $100 is all that I can cough up. However, something is better then nothing. I will be in location for a max. of 2 months, then we're coming back here to start packing, cleaning and doing paper work preparatory to going home. We are to be stateside in late September, so this next 2 months is the last of fighting for us. We are very, VERY excited to come home. I'm hoping on my return to home base that I can get more involved and help out more with GOE. I could express my thoughts and feelings and my plans, but I don't want to leave you with any more of a novel, so I'll leave that for another time to explain. I must get going--duty calls--but please do feel free, sir, to send an e-mail any time asking whatever or for any news. I will gladly respond soon as I can. Thank you for your time and support in reading this. Before I go, you should know that YOU guys make us proud! Mike

His first line is what got my attention; there is no rank in the Army of Specialist Fourth Class!!!!!!!!!!

There's the rack of Specialist SPC (same pay grade as a Corporal, E4),but no Specialist Fourth Class. Years ago in the Army, we used to have ranks of Specialist 4 (E4, same pay grade as a Corporal CPL ), Specialist 5 (E5, same pay grade as a Sergeant SGT ), Specialist 6 (E6, same pay grade as a Staff Sergeant SSG ), and Specialist 7 (E7, same pay grade as a Sergeant First Class SFC ). Specialist 5,6,and 7 ranks were eliminated by the Army many years ago.

Maybe I'm making too much of a big deal about this, and I REALLY hope I'm wrong about this, but a Soldier telling the world that he's a Specialist Fourth Class makes me (with 26 years service under my belt and still serving and a former Specialist 4 myself!) VERY suspicious!

Again, I REALLY hope I'm overreacting, and I hope I'm wrong. I hope you Army vets here will at least understand why I'm suspicious.

My 2 cents, for whatever it's worth.

Paul, Specialist 4th Class is legitimate although a bit redundant because the only specialist class that still exists after 1985 is Specialist 4th class. You will see it used alot in obituaries. :(

As for Mike, God Bless You Mike! Not only are you serving our country, but donating your hard earned combat pay. Your story made me cry, but they are tears of pride. You are definitely an Eagle!

It's Specialist, plain and simple! Anyone who is or was in the Army knows this!

>>>

Yes, I know, and it bugs me when the funeral homes get it wrong too!!

Bottom line is, the correct name of the rank is SPECIALIST!

Again, my apologies if I'm making a big deal out of this, but I get VERY suspicious when Soldiers don't even know THEIR OWN RANK STRUCTURE! Remember that so-called "marine" who showed up at GOE1 in a SUMMER uniform?

I REALLY, REALLY hope this is nothing more than a HUGE misunderstanding on someone's part!

During my time (VietNam Era) Mike would have been called a Spec 4. Perhaps he is just trying to make things a bit more clear for the non-military folks who are reading this.

While we are all a bit leary of moonbat infiltrators and wannabes "inside the wire" Mike's passion and Kit's backing are proof enough for me !

Well I have to agree with Paul on this on that specialist 4th class threw me too, if Kit says he is legit I can buy that. Doc the pay is a lot better now when I made pvt E-2 in 1987 I was making 736 dollars a month. I make a lot more than that now you can go to the mypay homepage and get current pay charts if you are curious as to what we make now.

Mike,

It is indeed a pleasure to hear from you, to know that you are carrying out your orders and mission with pride and purpose, and especially to know that you will be coming home soon. As a former Sp/4 who later attended OCS and retired in a Field Grade, I can say with authority that you epitimize the ideal soldier, American, and GOE member. Thank you for your service, your suppot, and your willingness to defend us with your life on the line. And for the CW3 gentleman, I entered the Army in 1958, too, but not being prior serive, I started out on $78.00 per month. But this is not about us, nor is it about the suspicious gentlemen who were concerned about your reference to being a Specialist Fourth Class and it's dated usage (whose legitmate concern is due to moonbat misconduct in the past) (and most of us know that moonbats do not believe in thier causes enough to put money on them); it is about YOU and the great job you and your buddies are doing.

I would also like you to look at our web site when you have the opportunity as we established it to support you guys and gals by focusing on the positive things you are doing under difficult and dangerous circumstances -- the kind of things our media is refusing to talk about. When you read the (daily changing) articles on our web site at: http://www.tpatch568.us, you will learn about the good a lot of your comrades around the country, and in Afganistan, are doing. You are wining this war and we are behind you 100 percent.

Mike and Joe66,hope this is a good & safe day for you both. When we have a Specialist 4th Class that is not only serving in harms way but is donating $100 every paycheck to an organization like GOE,I would have to say he's a damn sure better man than me.Mike stating his rank as Specialist Fourth Class is a PISS POOR reason to throw suspect darts at the soldier.Really not much difference than a Seargent as Sarge,Highest ranking NCO in a Unit as Top,REALLY JUST A JOB DISCRIPTION.Mikes job description is why he is a Specialist and not a Corporal and both being E-4 grade.Pvt E-1 no insignia,Pvt E-2 1 slash,Pvt 1st Class E-3 1 slash w/rocker,Specialist E-4 Eagle on Patch,Corporal also E-4 2 slashes,Sergeant E-5 3 slashes and on it goes. With Mike stating Specialist Fourth Class and exspecting promotion to Sergeant,i'm sure is explaining his current pay grade.WITH HIS ASS IN Harms way,DONATING with the pay HE receives to SERVE IN HARMS WAY says a hell of alot more ABOUT his character AND HIMSELF, than his description of his rank.MIKE & JOE66, GOD BLESS YOU GUYS AND THANK YOU EVERYDAY YOU SERVE.

Joe,good to hear from you, lets us know your still on duty and ready to kick somw sandrats ass.Didn't mean to throw out any spikes but GEEZ,I'm thinking here is an in country soldier not only serving in harms way but is taking a substanial amount of money per pay period and donating it to GOE.Accomplishing this at a lower pay grade and then being suspect because he adds Fourth Class to Specialist.Hell i didn't even know the Army quit using Spec 4,5 & so on in 85.Yes there are moonbats out there that slip in every now and then but i didn't read 1 word that was negative of the Iraq mission or any other conflict currently being faced by todays troops.Questioning this soldiers integrity over the 4th Class wording was just assinine in my opnion.Stay safe Joe and come home soon. You men and women deserve the best this country can offer.

Paul,i'm not going to get into a pissing contest with you but #1 this young man was introduced by Larry Bailey #2 Kit had given Larry the information about this soldiers continued donations of $100 every payday and his continued pledge to continue to do so #3 Larry invited the SPECIALIST to give the GOE some info about himself and of everything he wrote,he describes himself as Specialist 4th Class and THAT THROWS UP A HUGE RED FLAG.There is only 1 person that has walked on this earth PERFECT.I spent 9 years in the service and did fine while in the field, both in NAM as a grunt both tours and in training at Ft.Bragg and Border Guard in Germany, but in garrison i just couldn't do the nit picking bull. But even in garrison i've never heard someone correct a soldier calling another SARG OR TOP by saying "My correct rank is Sergeant First Class or Sergeant Major" Last,NO, this ex-soldier did not react the way you did and still continues to state "I REALLY,REALLY hope that it's a HUGE misunderstanding".I WAS AND STILL AM MUCH MORE IMPRESSED BY HIS SERVICE TO HIS COUNTRY,HIS WILLINGNESS TO PUT HIS ASS ON THE LINE & AT THE SAME TIME FINANCIALLY SUPPORT GOE.You Sir can continue to have your opnions and views and i can continue to have mine.We can just agree to disagree.THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS THAT WE ALL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT OUR TROOPS AND THE MISSION.
