Press Coverage of the Gathering of Eagles

Scott Sexton wrote an article about American Legion Post 55's planned attendance at the Gathering of Eagles:

Plans for protest stir Vietnam vets into action

American Legion Post 55 ordinarily isn't the kind of place that can be described as a hotbed of dissent where demonstrations are organized. Yet that's exactly what's been happening as a small but dedicated group of Vietnam-era veterans has been getting together to discuss a trip to Washington in a few short weeks.

About 30 members of the Legion started organizing for the trip shortly after they got wind of a large anti-war demonstration planned for March 17. It wasn't the anti-war message that got their backs up so much as it was the location that activists picked to start a march to the Pentagon - the Vietnam Veterans Memorial - and what happened during an anti-war rally held Jan. 27. On that day, a small group of over-exuberant protesters spray-painted slogans on the Capitol steps.

The veterans fear a repeat performance that could damage the memorial, something they say they will not allow.

"We're going to protect our Wall," said Bob Penn, a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War. "It's that simple."

...

"People can say what they want, and I can see where the memorial would seem like a logical place to start a march like that to the Pentagon," Penn said. "We're taking a nonconfrontational approach, and it's not to choose one side or the other about the war in Iraq. That's for each man to decide on his own."

Penn's group, Operation Rolling Thunder, is helping to secure the proper permits from the National Park Service and to spread the word of their mission to protect the Vietnam Memorial by e-mail and word of mouth.

He has his own views on the war in Iraq ("The simple fact is that protests hurt soldiers in combat") and realizes that hotheads can exist on both sides of the March 17 protest. He is confident that the two groups can co-exist without incident or flare-ups.

How do you know that Vietnam Memorial was planned starting point? How do you know that protesters spray painted the Capitol steps? I have written both the Architect of the Capitol and the Capitol Police and am awaiting their replies. I just sense that this entire spin up may just be another clever Republican operative manipulation of veterans just like they did in 2004.

"There you go again!" I look at the names on "my RVN wall" every day of four crewmembers who did not come home. One is still missing in action. Their names are strong reminders of why the RVN memorial and other war memorials are sacred grounds that we must dignify! I'll be there! Yesterday's and tomorrow's servicemen deserve nothing less.

She also plugged Gathering of Eagles, FreeRepublic and Roling Thunder. News is starting to trickle out on the MSM!

Spitting on veterans? Throwing paint on war memorials? Sorry, Sports fans - no violence, no spitting, no bottles of urine; and as to vandalism? Go look at that FRC video on how the Capitol was "defaced" at the last demo. The whole end-result of that horrifying anarchistic assault on our nation's sacred Capitol? Two already almost completely washed-out, faint and feeble stains a few inches across - both terminally ephemeral and less noticeable (and less damaging) than a good hit of classic Washington pigeon poop.

But you just gotta love how the sad old fantasy of "vile, violent, commie, hippie, anarchistic anti-american protestors" keeps re-running in these blogs. This worn-out trope left over from the old "stab-in-the-back" rewriting of how we lost the war in Vietnam follows point-by-point the pattern of the original stab-in-the-back loser fantasies of Ludendorff and all those embittered Freikorps cases of the Weimer years in Germany. Truly, it seems at times, there is nothing new under the sun.

What's really interesting though, is the eager - indeed, DROOLING - anticipation with which such fantasists as the GATHERING OF EAGLES crowd reports their expectations (read HOPES AND DREAMS) that maybe with just a little luck, ol' Hanoi Jane and Moonbat Cindy will oblige them by desecrating The Wall - and thus give the mighty mighty Eaglettes the excuse they dream of to unleash some mighty righteous cleansing violence.

Aint gonna happen, folks. What WILL happen is this: The protestors will assemble on the Mall, near The Wall (and other locations) and march and speak with the usual lack of violence, lack of vandalism, lack of outrageous behavior, lack of ... well pretty much complete lack of anything exciting. They’ll preach their old reliable sermons to their old reliable choir - then go quietly off to their old reliable self-satisfied, self-congratulatory post-demonstration dinners with their friends and families.

Then FOX will scour its footage for any sign of enthusiastic adolescents trying on their junior Sandinista acts (with the obligatory I'm-such-an-outlaw-anarchist bandanna covering their faces to keep them from being identified by the death-squads they dream of), and cherry-pick from their on-the-scene interviews the most outrageous quote they can find by some would-be "revolutionary" thrilled to ecstasy by the concept of some camera time. They’ll throw it on their evening news, or maybe, if it is stupid enough, into O'Reilly's hopper, or run it for Pat Buchanan to comment on, regarding how such rudeness and lack of hygene expose the un-Americanism of all anti-war demonstrators.

All this while the disappointed Eagles slowly un-Gather - but not before reassuring each other (and themselves) how if they had just seen THE LEAST LITTLE BIT OF!!! ... of whatever ... they really REALLY would have kicked some serious dirty hippie commie traitor ass this time.

Well, maybe next time, fellas. For now, though, just slip your stretched-out copy of FIRST BLOOD back in the VCR (or, better yet, MISSING IN ACTION?) - and spend another year muttering about how " we shoulda just bombed the whole fuckin country flat, paved it over and use for a parking lot" (as I remember the old phrasing, so popular in those endless barracks, bar and hooch bull-sessions).

Boo-YAH!

Same old circus all around; same old dog-and-pony show; same old signal-to-noise ratio.

Like bout 1-5.

Yawn.

Hey, Johnny boy, if I see you there, and you raise a finger to anyone, you'll be the one going down you blowhard.

As I've said elsewhere in comments, this website is meant to be an aid for folks who are working out their logistics to get to DC. It is not meant as an open forum for anyone with an anti-war screed. There are plenty of places for that, and it's not here.

Roger, JT, and Credo, all I ask is that you abide by our requests to stop agitating. This is not the time or place for it. You are obviously not attending the event, and you are only here to cause trouble. That does not speak very highly of you as men, and demonstrates a terribly juvenile attitude. Frankly, I'm tired of reading your insults, your condescension, and your disrespect for all of us. There's clearly no point to it - except to make you feel better about yourselves.

Are you men or are you little boys? If you're men, then you must admit that your insults are not going to change anyone's mind, they only serve to make you look trollish, they are a waste of your time, and a waste of OUR bandwidth.

I think John missed the point entirely. I am Not going to the Gathering of Eagles on March 17 with "drooling anticipation" for a fight......I am going to Stand....to protect a memorial that holds a special place in my heart, to honor those listed on the memorial and all of our veterans....and to honor those men and women who are currently fighting.

I am going because I believe it is the right thing to do, as the daughter, granddaughter, and also girlfriend of veterans who have served our country.

The March 17 anti-American rally "cannot go unchallenged. It’s up to each of us to supply the how best to respond." Col. Harry Riley

Honor has the power to overcome dishonor. Our vision should be to respond to their 100,000 person rally with a 2,000,000 person Gathering of Eagles in America's Canyon of Heroes. Please help invite Americans everywhere to visit http://honorthem.townhall.com then let thousands of us to ask New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to host a parade down that canyon that no American will ever forget. An honor to end all honors.

We live in the land of the free because this is the home of the brave. My vision is to see rank after rank of Army, Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard servicemen and women -- as far as the eye can see -- marching down our Canyon of Heroes. What a glorious day that would be !

Our Veterans and current service members deserve no less than a parade to eclipse the March 17 rally and all other anti-American rallies. Lets do it !

Read this cursory investigation of the question: "Who would ever deface a memorial? Certainly not the anti-war crowd!!" The anti-war crowd holds no war memorial sacred, so why should they care one whit if it's disrespected or defaced? Answer: they don't - they never have.

http://www.gatheringofeagles.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=85

Of course, this doesn't even touch all the incident sof throwing red paint on recruitment offices. That happens all the time - so often in fact, that it barely makes the news.

Those are the actions of the anti-war crowd - those are their tactics. It would be imprudent to believe that tens of thousands of the great unwashed will descend upon the Vietnam War memorial led by the traitorous Jane Fonda, and they will all behave perfectly. It's never happened and it never will. That's why we will be there.

What John Thomas Gillick doesn't understand is that those of us who have counter protested against the Leftists HAVE SEEN the war protestors act in an angry, almost rabid fashion in their denunciation of the miission our troops are executing. Look at the list of supporters of the anti-war march; it's a who's who of the same old Communists and Marxists that have been undermining America since Vietnam. Yet they say they "support" the troops. Sorry John, the guys over there don't see you people that way. I know because I'm ex-military as are all these other guys. What have you done?

I will be at the Wall and I'll conduct myself as I do when I participate in Patriot Guard missions. I'll stand silent with my American Flag while the Leftists will scream and froth with their hate filled signs and banners. If you have eyes to see that day you will see which side is the more dignified and positive side...and you will be ashamed of your participation in the "American" Left.

I have always been a 'night owl'. I am willing to stand the mid (0000-0400), long (0400-0630)or short-dog (0630-0800) watches leading up to 0700 on the 17th. Will there be anyone defending OUR WALL with me during those time segments? I have two buddies and an MIA whose bracelet I've worn since 1984 to defend. The desecration of our Capitol Building by Pelosi's people shows that OUR WALL must be defended.

I do not believe any of the Eagle's should be wanting a fight. As a matter of fact I am most certain the vast majority do not. We are there to be guards for the memorials and to stand up for the soldiers and military who are laying it on the line today. The above vet who wrote so dimissively of all those that want to be there and stand up is sad but he has that right. I just do not want him standing next to me. I believe we nneed to stand up to the antiwar crowd that makes things tougher on our military.

I find it very interesting that no one in the media or any liberal has made mention of all the people who were murdered by the communists after the U.S. was forced to leave Viet Nam. If we were allowed to bomb the crap out of Hanoi as was recommended by the military, things would have been much different. We seem to be following the same path that Neville Chamberlain took when he came back to England with a "Peace Treaty" from Adolf Hitler! What we are dealing with now, I feel, is much more dangerous than anything Hitler could have dreamed of. We have an enemy within! Nakita Kruschev said that 'We will bury the West, and they will sell us the shovels'! The Soviet Union is no longer, but the mess left behind will haunt us forever. And, yes, where are all those weapons from the 'cold war'? Nobody knows. The Viet Nam Memorial and others like it are sacred. They represent our fathers, brothers and sisters who sacrificed their lives so that we could even consider a protest such as this. But do not desecrate their memory! I was a draft dodger during the Nam era. I joined the U.S. Navy! I didn't want to sleep in a foxhole or be in some other third world hell hole, but I did my duty to defend my country. But I felt that I had to do something! I didn't hide behind another country pretending to be getting an 'education'! Let's put our politicians to the test and see if they are really defending the Constitution!

To rebut those who believe that the March 17 March on the Pentagon organized by the Stalinits of ANSWER will feature a "lack of violence, lack of vandalism, lack of outrageous behavior," I invite you to my blog post documenting the last ANSWER demonstration in Washington in September 2005:

http://conprotantor.blogspot.com/2005/09/marching-with-moonbats-in-dc.html

This is what you can expect to see at this coming march. I can assure you that the outrageous behavior in these photos are just the tip of the iceberg. Vandalism is part of every radical demonstration in DC. You will see spray painted graffitti at EVERY demonstration.

As for a lack of violence, I was manhandled in the second ANSWER anti-war march I attended by one of the goons organizing the event. I was photographing the march from the median when the ANSWER bouncer started the usual intimidation tactics, pushing, and grabbing. I served in the Air Force for eight years and nobody laid a hand on me. By contrast, I was physically assaulted at my second "peace" march. Don't kid yourself. The ANSWER commies are no pacifists. They are fighting for the other side.

I can guarantee you that out of the 30,000 to 50,000 protestors who attend this demonstration, there will be hundreds of them who are capable of anything. They will seek out a confrontation with military vets at The Wall.

EVERYONE LISTEN UP!! Our rally and presence at the "WALL" is to be a peaceful undertaking to insure that our memorial is not desecrated....That's it, pure and simple.

I believe that even people such as the ones we will be facing are smart enough not to push the matter and try to do anything stupid....

There's far too much experience, training, and attitude facing them to deliberately take on their opposites (US)......That's like bringing a club to a gunfight.....

So relax and enjoy their show while we quietly and respectfully honor and protect the "WALL." This is one time where we can make a difference, plus meet others like us and all for a good cause.
