(I've emailed Sandy for the pattern and the material requirements. If any of you are interested in knitting up some of these she says that they will collect them until October 11th. Fire up the needles!~kathy)

Good morning !

My name is Sandy Whipple and I'm the Adult Services/Outreach Coordinator for the Goffstown Library.  Some of you may know me from The Moving Wall's visit to Goffstown and/or presence at the Manchester vigils.  For the past several years, the library has participated in The September Project...connecting the world one library at a time.  The project found roots in the events and aftermath of 9/11.  Libraries in communities around the world host programs not only commemorating and memorializing those lost on that day but also on democracy, patriotism and freedom, to mention just a few.

Goffstown has participated in a number of ways in the past,  with members from some of your organizations attending and assisting with events.  Last year for the first time, the library opened for the full, round the clock 24 hours on 9/11, standing in polar opposition to all that terrorism is and all it wishes to destroy.  Libraries represent all cumulative human knowledge and as such, represent one of our most fundamental of freedoms; free, unfettered access to that information and knowledge.  This year we proudly plan to repeat the 24 hour continuous opening of our doors but in addition, wish to include interactive, engaging community events.  One such event is to be a Knit a thon to produce helmet liners for troops engaged in the war on terror.

We have obtained regulation patterns and with assistance from Frank Emiro and Bobby Bruneske, have made contact with the Pease Greeters who will happily receive and dispense the liners to departing troops.  In order to be truly "regulation", the liners must be made of 100% wool. Unfortunately, the 100% wool is a bit more costly than the wool/synthetic blends.  I'm confident that many knitters will purchase their own wool but for anyone wishing to participate but unable to do so on their own, we would like to be able to help by providing some of the yarn.  For those of you who know me, you know that I do nothing half-way and this is no different.  I want this done RIGHT!   I want Goffstown to produce HUNDREDS of liners and I want personal finances NOT to be a reason for not contributing.  Here's where you guys come in.  I am asking that each group donate $100.00 to help with the purchase of yarn for this worthwhile endeavor.

I hope you will take this to your respective organizations and and ask that they thoughtfully consider the request.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns and I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Sandy Whipple
