Because of the Brave
by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro © 2009
(written Memorial Day, May 25, 2009 to honor those who gave all)
The sun rises on a new dawn
Which some will never see
Where we who live, live in freedom
Because of those who served
So we are free
All gave much, some gave more
And some gave all
Today we remember, will never forget
We are land of the free because of the brave.
Their blood spilled out in Flanders
Soaked the shores of Normandy
One by one they gave their lives
Not for themselves, but you and me
On countless islands in the Pacific
Pusan, Inchon and jungles of ‘Nam
All gave much, some gave more
And some gave all
Today we remember, will never forget
We are land of the free because of the brave.
For children playing baseball games
For lovers picnicking at the beach
For shoppers at the malls
For protestors lining the streets
For Buddhists, Hindus, Islamic, atheists, Christians, Jews and more
All gave much, some gave more
And some gave all
Today we remember, will never forget
We are land of the free because of the brave
For Afghan women who go to school
Iraqis who now vote
They gave their lives in Fallujah
Haditha, Baghdad, on the roads
In the mountains of Afghanistan and on nameless desert sands
May God be with their families
May He bless them every day
And may we never forget the Star Spangled Banner yet waves
O’er the land of the free because of the brave.
