Daily Contemplation: Reflection of Soldiers
Posted On: June 22, 2007 at 4:45 PM By: Gabi
(Excerpt of letter written by Chaplain Jim Higgins on 5/14/07. LSA Anaconda)
"Suddenly there was a lone voice, then a dozen, and quickly the room was filled with the voices of a thousand Soldiers 'And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?' It was the most inspiring moment I have had here in Iraq. I wanted you to know what kind of Soldiers are serving you here.
"I recently attended a showing of "Spiderman 3" here at LSA Anaconda. We have a large auditorium we use for movies as well as memorial services and other large gatherings. As is the custom back in the States, we stood and snapped to attention when the National Anthem began before the main feature. All was going as planned until about three-quarters of the way through the National Anthem the music stopped.

Now, what would happen if this occurred with 1,000 18-22 year-olds back in the States? I imagine there would be hoots, catcalls, laughter, a few rude comments, and everyone would sit down and call for a movie. Of course, that is, if they had stood for the National Anthem in the first place. Here, the 1,000 Soldiers continued to stand at attention, eyes fixed forward. The music started again. The Soldiers continued to quietly stand at attention. And again, at the same point, the music stopped.

What would you expect to happen? Even here I would imagine laughter as everyone sat down and expected the movie to start. Here, you could have heard a pin drop. Every Soldier stood at attention. Suddenly there was a lone voice, then a dozen, and quickly the room was filled with the voices of a thousand Soldiers 'And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?' It was the most inspiring moment I have had here in Iraq. I wanted you to know what kind of Soldiers are serving you here.

Wow, This sure makes me proud of our Troops! Not that I am not already proud, but this really puts the the icing in the word Patriot. After seeing how the general public likes to hoot and howl, it is like a dream come true to see our Troops respond in such a respectful and spontaneously patriotic manner. I will bet their commanders are as proud as peacocks! I am. Lowell J. Mix, MAJ, MI, (Ret)

I am stationed on the same base as Chaplain Higgins I have seen him in church and I saw him on Friday afternoon at the laundry facility so I asked him if he was the one that sent that out in an email and he verified that it was him, I also invited him to check out the GOE site and see what it was all about I hope he pays us a visit.Major Higgins if you see this I am the Staff Sergeant you spoke with at the laundry facility.

Joined Soldiers Angels, than found out about Patriot Guard Riders.Thought one needed to ride a motorcycle..Not so.Old Granny, here takes her flag and heads out in her car. After receiving a note from a Marine Sgt.,noting that the troops were down because of our liberal media,I joined the Gathering of Eagles..My first protest (age 66) ,was at West Point..Hope this is read by the troops.... We love you-Pray for you and your families--and very much appreciate all the sacrifices you make for us. May God keep each of you in the palm of His hand..

As a E-5 in the active duty and seeing some of the soldiers I serve with, I sometimes wonder if any are as devoted and patriotic as I am. This article show's me that I am not alone in the honor I feel to serve my country. Thank you sir and to the soldiers with you at Balad, in restoring my wanning faith in my fellow service members.
