Figured you would appreciate this.  I'm working overtime in the main hospital for the next few weeks and was outside smoking.  When I came back into the lobby I spied a gentlemen around 70 years old standing at attention, and although in civilian clothes, he looked as if he was still on the parade ground.  I walked up, extended a hand and said, "Thank you for your service Sgt Major."  He looked at me and said, "How the hell did you know?" My response, "Hell Sgt Major you guys have been scaring the hell out of me since I was 17."  We both laughed and I went on my way.  I'd say I warmed his heart some, but as we both know E-9s don't have hearts.  Manchu.
