Prayer for Memorial Day 2010 and Beyond

for all Armed Services, veterans and their families

Heavenly Father, Your ways are so far above our own.  As far as the heavens   are above the earth, that’s how much higher your ways are than our own.  If we could understand everything you do and all of your creation then you wouldn’t be God, we would.  However, we remain Your humble creation, in awe of the You who created us.

Lord God, we do not understand war.  Most especially hard is the knowledge that You could have made this world a place where war did not occur and yet, You have not only allowed it, but allowed a dynamic where the existence of the supernatural adversary virtually guarantees there will always be war somewhere at all times until the end of life on earth.

Thank you for our free will and the privilege to choose to be Your children instead of having it mandated by You.  Thank You for being a God who loves us enough to want us to choose to love You versus You giving us no alternative.  But we also understand that in giving each human being this choice there will be those who do not choose Your way of loving others, but spend their lives seeking power and domination for their own purposes.  And there will also be those who hate and seek to destroy.  And so we understand, that in order to maintain our freedom, we must stand up and stand firm against these aggressors in order to secure our borders, our culture, our lifestyle and most importantly the freedom to worship You.  There will be war and though we love peace, we must sometimes fight back or be conquered.

Lord God, there are so many who are oblivious to the military and their families who sacrifice so much to preserve our values and our freedom.  But Lord God, those of us who know, desire to take time on this Memorial Day to thank them.

Lord God, pour out abundant, overwhelming blessing on every single military member and member of their families – whether their service was past or present.  Lord God, increase Your nearness to them in a way which they can tangibly sense.  Let them feel Your supernatural arms of comfort around them in difficult and strained circumstances.  Make a way for them to draw closer to You so that Your incomprehensible peace and joy and flow with increase into their lives and improve their everyday.  Lord God, send angels to each service member to keep them emotionally, physically and spiritually safe and send angels to their families.  By the power and guidance of Your Holy Spirit keep their marriages strong and their bonds with their children healthy and productive.   Lord God, ease the worries of those who are left at home and raise up the Church community to support these families during deployment.

Where our troops have returned from deployment invisibly or visibly wounded, provide the means for their full recovery!  We trust in You!  Only You can do this!  We are willing to each do our part, but it will take Your Wisdom, power and plan for the work to be directed and completed.  The problems are too large for us, but nothing is impossible for you.  Lord God, where veterans are impacted with PTSD and TBI, show the way for them to be treated with honor until they are fully recovered.  We know You did not mean for them to come back physically safe from war to be forever emotionally handicapped.  Lord God, pour into them what they need from You.  Make the way.  And show us what roles You would have each of us play in the process.

Lord God, heal their memories and heal their hearts.  Continue to raise up tools and truth which cause them to understand that You still love them and forgive them whenever they ask, no matter what happened outside the wire.  Lord God, let the truth of Your infinite grace, love, mercy and forgiveness go forth widely and let the truth of the honor of the profession of warrior become better known!

Lord God, give our veterans good productive lives within the civilian community.  You created us for good work.  We are asking that You provide this for our veterans and that You make the adjustment to civilian life easy for military families.

For those veterans who are now incarcerated because of their invisible, unrecognized and undiagnosed (or improperly treated) injuries, Lord God, use them for good where they are.  Cause them to know You ever deeper and shine Your light to those who might otherwise never know You.  Let not their time in prison/jail be wasted.  Speak to them and be with them as You were with Joseph in the Old Testament in prison in Egypt.  And Lord God, in these circumstances we call upon You to fulfill Your promise to eventually use ALL things for good in light of eternity.  We place our trust in You.  You are all that we have.  We wait in joyful hope which springs from this trust to see Your result.  You will use this all for eventual good, Lord.  Surely You will.  In the meantime, be with the families.  Put true friends around them and be balm to their weary and discouraged spirits.  Lift them and their incarcerated loved ones up on Your wings and let them feel Your love and Your presence.  Let the days pass swiftly and be filled with value regardless of circumstances.  Surround them with good people who will stand by them and be understanding.

And where our troops have made the ultimate sacrifice and given their lives for our freedom. Lord God, we pray for their families.  We are grateful beyond words for what their sacrifice has wrought, but we are grieved beyond words for their loss.  Lord God, come with wings of healing and comfort these families.  Bring the right people around them at the right time, help the churches to know how to reach out.  Bring healing over time as only You can and secure the memory of their loved ones in the minds of our society forever.  Let their loved ones never be forgotten!

Lord God, we entrust everything regarding the safekeeping, the emotional, physical and spiritual well-being of our armed forces and their families to you.  We cannot survive as a country without them, Lord God.  We appreciate them so and are hugely blessed by them.  Let them know that we care and help us know how to better reach out and serve those who serve us.  O Mighty Warrior King, thank You for being their Sovereign General, Guide, Dwelling Place, Refuge, Protector, Provider and Comforter.  Our trust is in You.  You alone are Victor.  In You alone is Victory in all our circumstances.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
